what is the difference between an APP and an API

I have been building website with WordPress and a couple of JavaScript for sometimes and I  have come across the term APIs a couple of time even though I have never really gotten to know much about it.

So, I am taking this full stack course on web development and we have come the the API development section and i am a bit confuse.

I want to know what exactly is the difference between an APP and an APIs if possible with references to articles that can help me fully understand the concept and use case.

Also, do all application require APIs?
